Black Sesame Balls Recipe

Black sesame seeds, or Hei Ze Ma as they are known in Chinese Medicine, have such a rich flavor and are packed with benefits. This recipe offers nutrient-packed treat which is inspired by TCM principles, particularly supporting Kidney essence and nourishing Yin, and they are delicious!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup black sesame seeds (lightly toasted)

  • 1/2 cup black sesame tahini

  • 1 cup pitted dates (softened in warm water if needed)

  • 2 tablespoons honey (or adjust to taste)

  • 1/2 cup almond flour (or any nut flour for binding)

  • Pinch of sea salt

  • Optional: 1 tablespoon coconut oil for extra moisture

Procedure

  1. Toast the Black Sesame Seeds by heating a dry skillet over medium heat, then add the black sesame seeds and toast for 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly until aromatic. Set aside to cool.

  2. Blend the dates In a food processor, pulse the pitted dates until they form a sticky paste.

  3. Add the toasted sesame seeds, black sesame tahini, honey, almond flour, and salt to the food processor. Blend until the mixture forms a sticky dough. If it's too dry, add a small amount of coconut oil or water.

  4. Scoop out 1 tablespoon of dough at a time and roll it into a ball between your palms.

  5. Optional: Coating the balls in black sesame seeds, cocao powder ( as depicted above) or shredded coconut for extra texture and presentation.

  6. Place the sesame balls in an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up. Store in the refrigerator for up to a week or freeze for longer storage.
