Natural Medicine and Chinese Medicine for Children

As parents, we all want the best for our children, especially when it comes to their health and well-being. Introducing children to natural medicine techniques can set them up for a long and healthy life, especially when you can make these natural remedies and techniques accessible and fun. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other natural medicine techniques offer a holistic and gentle approach to pediatric wellness. In this article, we will explore how these natural practices can be incredibly useful for children.

Natural medicine involves a wide range of therapies and treatments that focus on harnessing the body's innate healing abilities. This phrase can encompass, naturopathic ideas, Chinese medicine therapies, as well as many other healing modalities.

Some of the best natural ways to help keep your child's immune system, and Qi balanced are as follows;

Herbal Remedies and Tea

Herbal medicine has been used for centuries to treat various ailments. For children, herbal remedies can provide gentle relief from common issues like colic, coughs, upset tummy, and colds. Chamomile, ginger, and echinacea can soothe discomfort and boost the immune system. Numerous Chinese herbal remedies are tailored to each child's unique constitution. They can address health concerns like asthma, eczema, and attention difficulties as well. Tea is by far the easiest way to introduce more herbs into a child's diet.

  • Honey Lemon Ginger Tea- This is my go-to whenever my children have upset stomachs or are coming down with a cold or scratchy throat.

  • Chamomile Tea- This is such a nourishing tea for when a child's nervous system is unregulated, when they are unable to calm down, or when sickness is impacting their sleep cycle.

  • Peppermint Tea- This herbal tea can help soothe an upset stomach, and ease nausea, sore throat, cough, and even calm motion sickness. It can also help with a stuffy nose from colds or allergies.

  • Elderberry Syrup- This is something I always have on hand. It helps to shorten the duration of flu and colds and boost immunity. I give it to my kids regularly, especially when they are just starting to get sick or look a bit run down.

Homeopathy

Homeopathic remedies use highly diluted substances to stimulate the body's self-healing mechanisms. They are safe for children and can address issues like teething troubles, allergies, and sleep disturbances effectively. Make sure to check in with your physician before using remedies at home.

  • Homeopathic Arnica- This is a stable in my medicine cabinet and first aid kit. It is great for bumps, bruises, and strains.

  • Oscillococcinum- For the first signs of a cold or ‘flu. Take every 6 hours.

  • Aconite, Belladonna, Chamomilla- For colds and flu that manifest with fever, heat, and redness (Wind- Heat). Take 3-4 times a day.

Nutrition and Diet

Natural medicine emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet and proper nutrition. By making healthy food choices, parents can promote overall well-being in their children and prevent chronic health issues down the road. TCM places great emphasis on food therapy as well. By adjusting a child's diet according to their constitution, you can support their growth and development, boost their immune system, and prevent common childhood illnesses.

  • Immune Boosting Foods- Check out this article- 5 Kid-Approved Foods to Boost Immunity.

  • Activated Charcoal Applesauce- Stomachaches are a common occurrence for children. If they happen to eat something that hurts their belly or get a “stomach bug”, opening a capsule of activated charcoal and putting it in applesauce might be just the ticket.

  • Warming Socks- Not a dietary trick but a total hack to help bring down fevers.

Acupuncture and Acupressure

While the idea of needles might seem intimidating, acupuncture for children involves very thin, painless needles or non-invasive techniques like acupressure. It can help with issues such as allergies, digestive problems, and sleep disorders by rebalancing the body's energy flow. Research shows that acupuncture is a beneficial treatment for asthma, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), cerebral palsy, and complications of cancer.

Meditation and Mindfulness

Both natural medicine and TCM recognize the profound connection between the mind and the body. Stress and emotional well-being play a significant role in a child's overall health. These practices offer tools to promote mental and emotional balance. Simple deep breathing exercises can be very beneficial to help your child feel a sense of control when they have big emotions. Simple mindfulness exercises can help children manage stress and anxiety, and even improve their focus and attention span.

Yoga and Tai Chi

These gentle physical practices can improve a child's flexibility, balance, and concentration while providing a sense of calm and relaxation. Engaging in these activities with your child can increase their willingness to try as well as improve your relationship. There are many online options for parent and child that are engaging and fun!

Natural Options for Conventional Medications

Sometimes Tylenol is just what is needed to help a child, especially if they aren’t responding fast enough to herbs or other natural options. More natural options for conventional medications can be beneficial for children as alternatives. These products often utilize organic, dye-free, and non-GMO ingredients, providing parents with a more holistic and potentially gentler approach to addressing their children's health needs. With fewer synthetic additives, parents may feel more confident in choosing healthier to support their children's well-being while minimizing exposure to unnecessary chemicals. My favorite companies are Genexa, Hyland, and Similasan.

Lifestyle Choices Regular Check-ups

Making choices daily can become overwhelming when having to take into account yourself and your family’s health. it is important to be gentle with yourself while making the best decision you can.

  • Choosing the Right Doctor for Your Family- Holistic practitioners and well-versed Pediatricians conduct comprehensive health assessments, taking into account a child's physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors. This can lead to early detection and prevention of potential health issues. One of the strengths of natural medicine and TCM is their focus on preventive care. Rather than waiting for illness to strike, regular check-ups aim to maintain optimal health.

Natural medicine and TCM offer strategies to enhance a child's immune system naturally, reducing the frequency and severity of illnesses. Incorporating natural medicine and TCM into your child's healthcare routine can complement conventional treatments and offer a gentle, holistic approach to their well-being. It's essential to consult with qualified practitioners who specialize in pediatric care and work in collaboration with your child's healthcare provider. Ultimately, the goal is to provide your child with the best possible care, drawing from the wisdom of both modern medicine and ancient healing traditions. By doing so, you empower your child to thrive, not just in the absence of illness, but in the presence of optimal health and vitality.
